NPFL23: Samson Obi Assist Help Abia Warriors Beat Niger Tornadoes In Season Opener

Prolific Forward, Samson Obi came off the bench to assist a John Peter goal that earned Abia Warriors all available three points at the Umuahia Township Stadium against Niger Tornadoes as the 2023/2024 Nigeria premiere league season season got underway.

It was a game that lived up to its billing as it was a tough encounter for both sides on Saturday.

Buoyed by their vociferous home supporters, Abia Warriors pushed for an early goal and came close to scoring on many occasions but no thanks to it’s former goaltender, Joshua Enaholo who manned the post for the visitors and made some breathtaking saves as both teams went into the break without any goal separating both sides.

After the hour mark, Coach Erasmus Onuh introduced John Peter and Adejoh Ojonugwa for Emmanuel Onu and Uche Moses respectively to add bite to their attack.

But it was the introduction of Sampson Obi, a powerful and pacy forward who loves running at defenders, that came on for Sunday Megwo that changed the course of the game.

The maverick forward made a dashing run from the opponents left wing and into the 18 yard box before sending a delightful cross to the on-rushing John Peter to slot home and send the spectators into frenzy in the 80th minute.

Warriors then held unto the one goal lead until the centre referee, Akintoye Yemisi from Lagos state sounded the final blast of her whistle despite some descent chances that came the way of Tornadoes in the closing stages of the game.

Samson Obi who had played for Enyimba International of Aba and Al-Nasr Club of Benghazi, Libya, returned to Abia Warriors for his second spell at the club.
