Newly promoted premier league side Sporting Lagos FC have exceeded expectations at the ongoing NNL super 8 playoffs in Asaba to have confirmed their place in next season’s first tier of Nigerian football, hence they will be a force to contend with, so bullishly stated by young defender Nwokeji Chiemeka.

Speaking to ExclusiveNews via a phone conversation shortly after their 2-0 victory over Abeokuta Stormers yesterday, a result which sealed a historic Premier league status for the Lagos based outfit, the young defender highlighted how intentional they were prior to the Play-offs, which their minds firmly fixed on a Premier league football next season.

“We knew what was on the table before coming to Asaba, we wanted to make history, our formative year of barely 1 year old shows that we are pretty young, and we saw beyond that in terms of gaining promotion to the elite division, more reason we had to defy expectations to hit this stride in Asaba, now we are no more an NNL side, but going to flex muscle with the big boys in the elite league come next season”.

Speaking about the chances of Sporting Lagos FC in next season’s maiden Premier league appearance, the erstwhile Enugu Rangers left back reiterated their readiness, stressing they aren’t in the Premier league to make up numbers but strong contenders.

“Our promotion to the NPL next season is not gonna be a flash in the pan, but deservedly we are here to make a strong statement that we will compete with the so called big boys for a continental spot”.

Sporting Lagos will square up against Heartland FC in their last group game tomorrow as the owerri based outfit will be seeking for a solitary point for a promotion back to the NPL. Both sides stand as favourites for the much coveted premier league spots in group B, if the contest ends in a share of the spoils.
